1 Obey speed limits and traffic signs. Excessive speed reduces your abil- ity to avoid a crash, extends your vehicle’s stopping distance, and in- creases the severity of a crash when it occurs. Slow down in bad weather and in construction zones. 1 Maintain a safe following distance. Make sure to constantly check your mirrors. 1 Make only safe and necessary lane changes. Pick a lane and stay in it for as long as possible. Lane changes increase one’s risk of an accident. 1 Focus on your driving, and avoid or minimize distractions such as cell phone use, changing CDs, eating, or other activities which can take your attention away from the road. 1 Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and watch for other motorists whose driving behav- ior suggests they may be under the influence. 1 Get enough sleep. Sleep depriva- tion and fatigue can cause lapses in attention, slow reaction, and impaired judgment. Don’t be among themore than 40,000 people who lose their lives each year on North America’s roadways. 1775-136 Sharing the Road Adapted from Information by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance Operating a commercial vehicle on U.S. roadways can cause a lot of stress and pressure. Maneuvering through con- gested highways with aggressive car drivers darting around can be difficult, since everyone always seems to be in a rush to get where they are going. It may make you want to gamble by taking unnecessary risks, but your risk goes up greatly with each violation. In addition to the financial consequences, you are gambling with your family’s future, the future of other innocent parties, and your own life. Don’t take that gamble. It’s just not worth the risk. Unfortunately, our roads are only going to get busier, so it is important to be a responsible commercial vehicle opera- tor by following these safety guidelines: 1 Preinspect the condition of your vehicle and check to make sure all equipment is secure. 1 Maximize the vision around your vehicle by properly adjusting your mirrors and making sure they are clean. 1 Buckle up! It is your last line of defense. 1 Get in a safe mindset. 1760-156 1760-378 92 JULY 2013 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Well Screens 1760 " $( #" '# #" $ (& " '# #) % " * ))) %+ " + #! # # !! # # !!
