Chile’s Chuquicamata mine, which began production in 1915, is planning to create more than 620 miles of tunnels beneath the pit to extract addi- tional copper ore. State-owned Codelco, who has invested over $4 billion in Chuquicamata, believes the underground mine is capable of producing more than 330,000 tons of copper per year for another 50 years.
