WorldWide Drilling Resource
37 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® JUNE 2013 Water/Gas Exploration by Harold White I was in Kentucky a few weeks ago doing oil locations, finding a spot in the area to drill an oil well. We try to get as many creeks or oil fractures as we can, at least five. I told a guy his well site had about five oil levels or creeks of oil at his drill site, but I didn’t do the test for strength. When he drilled, he said he was able to count each level as he drilled through them, but the well was not productive at any of them. So I told him something was wrong; any one of them should have made a well, although they were really weak. They should be able to produce at least one gallon a minute, which is 34.28 barrels per day. I do not usually promote an acid treatment. This was a near direct hit, so I would use acid this time on all five. The wellbore was a little deviated... When I left Kentucky to return to Oregon, I stopped in North Carolina for a flight transfer. While I was in the air- port, a young lady came up behind me and asked if I was a well drilling con- tractor because of my shirt. I replied I was one, and she said, “You guys are doing a good job.” I thanked her and asked what she did. She works for the state as a water master checking up on drilling and wells in the field. We talked about her job for a while and how much she likes it. Then she started talking about salt water en- croachment and the rules and regulations on it. I asked her how rules and regula- tions could be put on wells by the ocean when you do not know which aquifers or creeks are confined and which are not. I wish we could have continued our con- versation, but I had a plane to catch... After I was home, I got a call from a happy guy who said the acid worked and the well was a gusher.
