69 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® JUNE 2013 Management Tips by Tim Connor Quotas, Budgets, Forecasts, Bonuses, Rules, and Other Myths “If you have a job without aggravation, you don’t have a job.” Malcolm Forbes Over the years, I have observed any number of approaches to getting employ- ees to work more effectively, smarter, and harder. You would be amazed how naïve many managers are today when it comes to understanding human nature, motivation, and the emotional needs and drives of their employees. Let’s take a quick look at what most people/employ- ees want. People want a number of things in their careers or jobs. To mention a few, they want to: 8 Be involved. 8 Feel like they belong. 8 Contribute. 8 Control their destiny. 8 Feel worthwhile. 8 Be in on things. 8 Be appreciated. 8 Be recognized. Most managers believe all employ- ees want is: 7 More money. 7 A nicer office. 7 Better benefits. 7 Shorter work week. 7 More vacation time. 7 More paid holidays. 7 Toys, perks, etc. So, many of these managers who use any of the items on the above list or create programs to get people mov- ing and keep them moving send a clear message to employees that, if they want to be recognized or get everything they want on the first list, just sell more, work longer hours, and work harder and they will receive more of the items on the second list - items the manager believes are important to employees. The prob- lem is, many of the items on the first list can’t be satisfied by getting more of the items on the second list, therefore cre- ating frustration and stress in your em- ployees. What’s the answer? If you want motivated, productive, happy, fulfilled, loyal employees, you should spend more time focusing on showing them how they can get more items on the first list than the second list. This doesn’t mean you can ignore the items on the second list. Remember: performance, employee loyalty, productivity, and success are not purchased or bartered, but cultivated over time.
