Understanding the Vulnerability of Basin-fill Aquifers Adapted from information by the U.S. Geological Survey Human health and economic con- cerns associated with drinking water standards prompted a study of the vul- nerability of basin-fill aquifers in the south- western U.S. to nitrate contamination and arsenic enrichment. Regional analyses of water quality in the principal aquifer systems was previously conducted by the National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program of the U.S. Geological Survey. The study Predicted Nitrate and Arsenic Concentrations in Basin-Fill Aquifers of the Southwestern United States is a compilation of the baseline knowledge of groundwater quality in 16 basins from the NAWQA Program. The southwestern model grid in the study represents over 190,000 square miles of basin-fill aquifers covering parts of Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. The statistical models show natural and human-related factors affecting aquifer vulnerability to contamination. The study indicated 2.4% of the area has nitrate concentrations equal to or greater than the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) drinking water stan- dard. However, arsenic in the basin-fill aquifers shows 42.7% higher than the EPA standard for drinking water. Areas predicted to exceed the nitrate drinking water standard are generally developed, especially for irrigated agri- culture, but are also in more urban loca- tions. In the areas affected by high nitrate concentrations in agricultural land use, fertilizer and livestock manure are sig- nificant sources, and are typically alle- viated with best management practices. Arsenic in groundwater is usually from natural sources, namely the basin- fill sediments and bedrock from which the sediments came. Although the areas predicted to have equal to or greater than the EPA standard are sparsely populated, some are within or adjacent to major population centers which could affect future groundwater development as these cities grow. Improved understanding from the study will assist in the development of tools water managers and others can use to assess and protect the quality of groundwater resources.
