64 MAY 2013 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® In Memory of Henry Grady Baker 1932 ~ 2013 by Veronica I. “Ronnie” Jones Managing Publisher Although we did not personally know Henry, “Grady”, as he was affec- tionately known by many, he hadmany friends in the drilling industry. The notice we received on his passing came from Lindell Peters of Enid, Oklahoma. He took the time to sit down to write a short letter to us and include the notice which appeared in the Enid News & Eagle March 20th. Lindell spoke of Grady as his “mentor”. He spoke of recent conver- sations he and Grady had on the pass- ing of so many drilling industry icons. He told me Grady was hired by Lee Lovel l dur ing the SpeedStar era (GEFCO plant in Enid). Grady handled all the domestic and export contracts, bids, and factory entries. He and Doc Faison were friends from way back. As Lindell was preparing to be a pallbearer for Grady, he reflected on his many blessings during these past 70 years and gave thanks for having Grady in his life. Henry was born to W. C. and Cora May (Moore) Baker in San Angelo, Texas, on March 28, 1932. He grew up in San Angelo, before moving to Enid his junior year of high school. He grad- uated from Enid High with the class of 1949 and proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married his bride Mary Ellen Nelson in Enid after his honorable discharge. Henry worked at SpeedStar for 35 yea r s ; was a Cubmas t e r o f Cub Scout Pack 18 at Monroe School, and Scoutmaster of Troop 19 at Willow Road Christian Church. Henry was fond of his reunions with his 189th Field Artillery Veterans’ Association. He also enjoyed wood- working. He is survived by his wife Mary; son William “Bill” (Teresa) of Goltry; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchil- dren. Our sincerest sympathies go out to his family and friends.
