The top $6000 scholarships were awarded to Austin Banks from Mingo Central High School andGideonWorkman of Belfry High School. Three $1000 schol- arships were presented to Sydney Chapman, Mingo Central High School; Casey France, Logan High School; and Courtney Lester, Mingo Central High School. The gues t speaker for the even t was Dr. Christopher Bise, a West Virginia U n i v e r s i t y (WVU) professor and Rober t E. Murray chairman. Dr. Bise encour- aged the schol- ars to work hard and commit to their academic future. He reviewed the WVU Department of Mining Engineering enrollment statistics and talked about the opportunity for “out of state” students to attend WVU at the “in state” tuition rate if schools in their residing state do not offer the major of their choice. Since Dr. Bise has been at WVU, the engineering program has nearly tripled in size, as well as partnered with the Civil Engineering, Agronomy, and Geology departments at WVU to form dual de- grees with Mining Engineering. Hi-Tech Construction sponsored the meeting and has been a gracious supporter of TVMI every year. Over the last seventeen years, TVMI has awarded 99 students $228,250 in scholarship funds. The TVMI scholarship is open to students from Mingo, Logan, Wayne, Pike, and Martin counties.
