He was a billionaire Texas oilman, developer, and philanthropist who was considered the father of hydraulic frac- turing. He was the son of a Greek immigrant who ran a dry cleaning business in Galveston, Texas. George graduated first in his class at Texas A&M University with degrees in petrochemical engineering and geology. After spending four years in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, he became a wild- catter with his brother and a partner. During his career, he participated in drilling some 10,000 wells. His company, Mitchell Energy & Development is credited with more than 200 oil and 350 natural gas discoveries. The firm spent nearly two decades developing hori- zontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, finding success in the North Texas Barnett Shale Formation in the 1990s. George and wife Cynthia, who passed away in 2009, raised ten children. They worked together on many projects dedicated to making the world a hos- pitable and sustainable place. A statement from the Mitchell family via the Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation read, We are and will forever be grateful for the gift of this remark- able life.
