In tribute to our friend Charles, I share these photos from the WWDR archives. Lest we forget... In Memoriam of Charles W. Brinkley, Jr. 6-7-1937 ~ 7-4-2013 by Veronica I. “Ronnie” Jones Managing Publisher As with every passing of our loved ones, whether they be family, friend, col- league, associate, we feel the pain. But when you look here at Charles in 2011, you see a great big, deep heart and smile that is unmistakably him. I met Charles and his wife Edith many years ago and cherish each moment. No one can take away our mem- ories. We must go on remembering all the good times with people like Charles. Charles William Brinkley, Jr. died at the early age of 76. He left behind his beautiful and devoted wife Edith Register Brinkley; his loving children Gayle Brinkley English (Steve); Alice Brinkley Hobin (Lt. Col. Patrick); grandchildren, Lauren Scott Smith (Scott); Matthew English (Amanda); Will Scott, Lindsey English, Alexandra Hobin, Carolin Hobin, and Noah Long; sis- ters Geraldine Davenport and Frances Brown; son-in-law William D. Scott, Jr. (LaMarr); brother-in-law Lee Register (Catherine); sis- ter-in-law Marguerite R. Alphin; and numerous nieces and nephews. His par- ents Charles William Brinkley, Sr. and Virginia Jackson Brinkley, as well as daughter Patricia Brinkley Scott, prede- ceased him. Many may not have known, but Charles was a water well drilling contrac- tor for over 46 years being highly regarded in the industry by many. He was proud to serve as President of the North Carolina State Ground Water Association, South Atlantic Well Drillers Association, and the National Ground Water Association. He was a member and past Master of Masonic Lodge #595 A.F. & A.M. of Wallace. He served his country as a National Guardsman for nine years. Here is a quote which appeared in his obituary in the News Observer that says it all: He was a testament to the type of Americans that built this country - a simple, hard-working, God-fearing man who sent three daughters to college. Strong, courageous, and gentle, he brought out the good in those near to him and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Charles Brinkley, Jubilee 2011 WWDR W D Photograph.
