39 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® APRIL 2014 Water/Gas Exploration by Harold White Drilling freshwater in a saltwater- dominant area, a remnant of the old ocean bottom - from what I have heard, we could say this about almost anyplace. When I detect salt water, it is mov- ing in its least line of resistance, the same as a creek. When I find a saltwater creek, it only means it has picked up some salt in its travel from point A. This water is moving toward the ocean carry- ing salt. At this point, it is too much salt. In our drill samples we find we hit salt in the sandstone starting at about 40-60 feet and deeper. Some of these deposits can go quite deep, so we try to find some reports or geological maps showing what is known. Unfortunately, we could not find much about this area, so we look for freshwater creeks. When we could detect four or five crossing in one spot, we would drill. Generally, we would hit a small freshwater creek in the first 40-60 feet, which means to us there is some freshwater below the 60- foot level, probably below the salt for- mation. We can tell a saltwater creek from a fresh one; we can also chart the direction of flow of all creeks, which means we can tell the pitch of the sand- stone at the depth of each creek that goes through it. We have drilled into freshwater in a saltwater zone. I remember the first one we drilled; the well made a lot of water coming up the borehole. It picked up a lot of salt. We thought it was not good, so we mentioned it to the landown- er, saying it would only be good for a fire. He said that was what he needed, to go ahead and put a pump on it. I noted the saltwater vein sure gave a freshwater signal before we drilled it, and it continued to. We made the well so it only pumped from the creek, and sealed off the salt formation. Sometime later, the landowner called and said the well was pumping fresh- water and they were using it.
