18 AUGUST 2014 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Success Tips by Tim Connor Is Your Filter Clean? “It is what we know already that often prevents us from learning.” Claude Bernard I’m not talking about your car’s oil filter, but your emotional, mental, and behavioral filter. We all have one, and it’s the cause of all conflict, unhappiness, stress, and so much more in life. Let me explain. Each of us has a mental filter that functions in our consciousness in which every new experience, all learning, each person and their behaviors, and every- thing you encounter during your waking moments must pass through before it is given access to your mind. This filter was activated at birth and doesn’t stop working until death. It is composed of a variety of factors such as age, gender, race, where you were raised, national- ity, upbringing, religion, expectations, fears, goals, memories, experiences, and anything you have been exposed to as a human. It has been fed by your par- ents or caregivers, churches, friends, coworkers, relatives, customers, employ- ees, etc. This filter, after a number of years, if not kept cleaned out will become clogged with a variety of opinions, beliefs, values, expectations, and so on. Here’s the problem - if you don’t keep your fil- ter clean, all of your reactions, responses, behaviors, emotions, and feelings will be controlled not by what is happening in the present, but by what is in your filter. I have had several experiences where another person’s filter caused them to react totally out of autopilot (directed by the filter’s contents) rather than what I said or did. Their responses were not appropriate for the circum- stances, and I’ll guarantee any random other ten people would have all acted differently - yes, according to their per- sonal filters. This is precisely the point. Everyone reacts or responds to life’s circum- stances, issues, problems, and chal- lenges totally uniquely depending on their individual filter’s contents. The question you need to ask yourself is simple - is your filter preventing you from enjoying life to the fullest, moment by moment, or are you at odds with cir- cumstances, people, events, etc.? So, how do you clean out your men- tal filter? Surround yourself with people you trust, respect, and like, but who have different beliefs, opinions, or values than you. Expose yourself to new concepts which may at first be uncomfortable through reading, seminars, CDs, etc. Get involved in networking groups or associations made of members who have different values, experi- ences, or education than you. Visit new places which have people from different cultures, religions, or nationalities. Let me repeat - what’s in your filter isn’t necessarily right or wrong, good or bad, but the information stored there has contributed to your current mindsets which control your attitudes and behav- iors in the present. Cleaning out your filter doesn’t mean you trash everything in it - you just start questioning its contents in a mature and responsible way, using a simple bench- mark: are you happy, filled with peace, successful, and stress-free? If not, clean out your filter. Graphics from the AEM Pictorial Database clearly reinforce the manual’s safety text and harmonize with current machine safety sign and manufacturer manual practices. The AEM Pictorial Database is a free online resource with 145 pictorials which can be downloaded through a variety of graphics and computer-aided design soft- ware packages. AEM created the pictorial database as an industry service to help companies communicate effective safety messages through consistent industry-recognized pictorial representations. Although AEM safety manuals are not a substitute for manufacturer manu- als, they are safety documents written in clear language presented in an easy-to- follow format. They are a convenient and cost-effective way to provide safety infor- mation to operators.
