Students in West Virginia Demonstrate Coal’s Benefits Adapted from Information by Coal Education Development and Resources West Virginia-based CEDAR (Coal Education Development and Resources) has completed their 13th year in southern West Virginia. During that time, the non- profit corporation has provided 515 teach- ers with over $156,000 in grant money to educate students about the benefits of coal. At the 13th Regional Coal Fair, 213 projects were on display from students demonstrating their understanding of how coal is formed, mined, and transported, as well as how the industry affects their daily lives. Over the past 13 years, 4712 projects have been created and a total of $45,539 in cash prizes has been awarded to stu- dents. In addition to the cash prizes, the students gained a hands-on education in coal and found pride in their strong coal heritage. Exhibits were entered in seven cat- egories: Art, English/Literature, Math, Music, Science, Social Studies, and Technology/Multimedia. Several winning CEDAR students presented their projects for Tug Valley Mining Institute attendees. Additionally, CEDAR and Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College have awarded $90,000 in schol- arship funding to students from the par- ticipating counties.
