Continuing Education: A Win-Win Situation Adapted from Information Provided by the National Association of Women in Construction The National Association of Women in Construction Education Foundation (NEF) seeks to educate those choos- ing the construction industry as their pro- fession today and tomorrow. Because of this goal, the foundation ensures the con- struction industry adult education courses offered are thorough, detailed, and indus- try specific to assist each candidate with every opportunity to further enhance their individual goals. Demands of the modern workforce are changing dramatically and rapidly. It is impossible to ignore the skills gap existing in today’s labor market and the fact thousands of job openings go un- fi l led because too many individuals lack the skills to perform these jobs. Continuing education is an option for men and women to get a better shot at promotions or job openings. Pat Peachy is just one example of a student who has benefitted from con- tinuing her education through NEF. She credits much of the knowledge she gained through the Construction Industry Technician course and other educational programs through NEF as the reason she was promoted from receptionist to contracts administrator. “As a result, I have become the go-to person at my company for contract review,” said Peachey. Small businesses in the construc- tion sector are positively affected by their employees’ continued education efforts. Employers benefit from offering tuition reimbursement, making sure rel- evant courses are taken which fit an employee’s specialty. Thus, an employ- ee gains training and education which will ultimately enhance their perform- ance as well as production for the com- pany. Continuing education and profes- sional development can be a crucial investment by both employers and em- ployees, where the benefit to the com- pany and the individual is priceless. NEF’s adult education programs provide small businesses in the construction trade an opportunity to offer valuable training and education. Studies show education is becom- ing a necessity more than an option. NEF’s courses can be a win-win for 80 DECEMBER 2014 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® the temperature is hotter than a certain point or cooler than a certain point. We don’t need to know the specific temper- ature value. Other factors to consider in this equa- tion would be reliability and durability, but it isn’t much of a problem with a diode. While anything can fail, there isn’t much to go wrong with a diode because the current (amperage) is lim- ited by the series resistor. If there’s a broken connection or the diode “shorts out” to ground, the meas- ured voltage will swing radically high (broken connection) or low (shorting to ground). Provision can be made to detect either or both of these conditions. But since it is such a rare event, is it worth the time and trouble to implement? So go ahead and be cheap. Just be smart cheap!
