33 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® FEBRUARY 2014 Water/Gas Exploration by Harold White Locating Water for A Friend of Medjugorie at Caritas of Birmingham At A Friend of Medjugorie at Caritas of Birmingham, Alabama, they have too much iron in the wells. They want a well with no iron, and from their studies they thought if anyone could do this, I could find a well site. I thought I could get some water with less or no iron if I studied the prob- lem and had some acreage to work with. He asked when I could come and how many days I would like to be there. I said his place sounded very interest- ing and I would like to be there one week to get acquainted and do some research on the problem. He said my ticket was at the Eugene, Oregon, air- port and someone would pick me up at the Birmingham airport. I was met at the Birmingham airport and we drove to the Caritas mission. The next morning we checked some of the existing wells and started looking for a well site that would produce a lower iron count in the water. A lot of things happened in the fol- lowing days I would like to tell you about; just to be with honest people is unbe- lievably uplifting. Tony, Zachary, and I were going through the fields when I told them to look way over at the end of the fence. It was where I wanted to drill. I wanted to go over and check it out. The well was soon drilled and they got what they wanted. When it came time to leave, we met at the building where they print books. The man taking me to the airport asked me to wait a minute so he could go tell the others I was leaving. To my surprise, a large number of people came out of the building, formed a line, and came down to where I was standing. They had a lot of compliments on what they had heard during the week. Some were saying how gifted I was to be able to do that. These were the most and best com- pliments I have ever had in such a short time. I have given speeches at large meetings and had standing ovations, but this was special. The company plans to develop the Sleeping Giant project located on rela- tively flat agricultural lands with existing roads and infrastructure. TheWilliston Basin is part of the mas- sive Niobrara Formation, a significant petroleum system in the USA which has produced over one trillion cubic feet of natural gas from shallow accumulations. Not much drilling has been done in the Sleeping Giant prospect area. The drilling which has been done was located off structure from the Strata-X prospects with prior wells predominantly targeting deeper Cretaceous or Paleozoic targets. The Niobrara Formation in this area has been overlooked despite gas shows and small flares being reported. In the mid 2000s, four wells were drilled in this part of North Dakota to test shallow gas shows. None of them were completed as all were drilled off structure for the Niobrara gas play. Adrilling company has been contract- ed to drill the wells once final approval of the company’s four drilling permits, filed with the State of North Dakota, is received.
