62 FEBRUARY 2014 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® New Guidance on Reducing Methane in Residential Water Wells Adapted from Information from the National Ground Water Association The NGWA (National Ground Water Association) has issued a new best suggested practice (BSP) for dealing with methane gas in residential water well systems. In an effort to provide guidance to water well professionals, the BSP, Reduce and Mitigate Problematic Concentrations of Methane in Residential Water Well Systems may also be of value to well owners. The new BSP includes: • Information on the occurrence and geological implica- tions of methane. • Methodologies for well construction. • Well operation considerations. • Analysis methods for detecting methane in groundwater. • Procedures to mitigate the presence of methane. • Health and safety information relating to methane. The document reiterates how proper construction and reg- ular maintenance of water wells is vital to reducing risks to groundwater and protecting public health. If there is a reason to suspect the presence of methane in a residential water well, the water supply should be tested by a certified drinking water testing laboratory. The BSP was developed by a group of NGWA profession- als and is available through the NGWA online bookstore. Reggie & Virgil for Noland Drilling Equipment.
