70 FEBRUARY 2014 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® GEFCO Training Class 2013 Through the Eyes of a Student...Part V by Veronica I. “Ronnie” Jones Managing Publisher The excitement in this year’s WWDR / GEFCO Scholarship winner’s voice was something we will never forget. This year’s winner is a fourth-generation well drilling professional. Dylan Logan from Bakersf ield, Cal i fornia, received the call from us, and he immediately turned to his peers and said, “I won!” Then he came back to the phone and said, “I am so excited right now. It’s unbe- lievable!” Needless to say, we were just as excited to have a young drilling professional be able to take advantage of this opportunity. The great group at GEFCO is eagerly looking for- ward to meeting Dylan and giving him all the knowledge they can in that short one-week training. As always, they will do a great job. Now, onto the continuation of my training in 2013 at this won- derful facility. Last month we were spinning buckets, and turning bolts in the shop. We moved right along to looking at some outstanding rigs, one of which was actually an ASTEC unit pictured here. I’m sure they will be happy to quote you a price. We were all really excited when we head- ed out in front of the GEFCO facility and had our class photo taken! They wouldn’t let me not be in the photo - even though I was their “official” pho- tographer for this year. No dawdling allowed at this class - so it was back to work as you can see here with our instruc- tor Jim Smith getting into the nitty gritty of things and one of us cal- culating to come up with the right “recipe for success”! You see, it’s not all drilling holes into the earth. There are very important cal- culations you MUST MAKE to have suc- cessful drilling. What his questions were (maybe you know the answers?) ~ How much H 2 O is needed to pretreat the mud? What product do you use, and how much? We did get our hands dirty though! So, yes, at this unique Resource Drilling Fundamentals Training Seminar, you get to do it all - firsthand and up-front. Don’t be shy - that doesn’t work at GEFCO !
