Reggie’s World by Reggie Stockert Buckeye BOP llc Wow, another new year! I cannot believe what a difference a year can make. For me, I could write a book. No, no, it would be a novel or a made-for- TV miniseries. The pace I am running at is unbelievable, but I am staying with the pack. One of the things we do besides sell or rent BOPs (blowout preventers) is manufacture the hydraulic hoses that control the BOP in an emergency. The product is a red, fire-resistant hydraulic hose, mostly one-inch, in either 3000 or 5000 psi. But in our spare time (LOL), we also manufacture rotary and vibrator hoses. some real stringent guidelines. Oh well, enough shop talk. I always thought I had a handle on the economy and business trends in my area. Even though I am not in the water well busi- ness any longer, I still manage to keep track of what's going on, and I really don't see any change for the better here in East Central Ohio. I fear we are going to have a hard time finding qualified people, let alone keeping them in the business of providing water to the pub- lic. I guess time will tell. Til next month, Reggie Reggie Stockert may be contacted via e-mail at admin@ worldwidedrillingresource.com Rotary hose is what I called the kelly hose or the flexible hose that con- nects halfway up the mast and attaches to the swivel. A vibrator hose is the flex- ible hose that connects the discharge side of the mud pump to the drill. Anyway, we have the ability to swedge the ends on custom lengths and test the hoses. They range in size, pressure, and length. The trophies in this product line are the ones that service (at least in my territo- ry) the big triple drilling rigs arriving from Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, to name a few. The granddaddy is 75 feet long with 3-inch ID (inside diameter), 7500-pound working pressure, and 15,000-pound test pressure. We keep one in inventory ready to go at all times. These hoses have to be manufac- tured to American Petroleum Institute (API) standards and tested to specific requirements. This means holding it at the maximum pressure of the weakest part of the assembly. The weakest link, in most assemblies, is the flange or the hammer union that makes the connec- tion to the rig which needs to maintain these pressures for 15 minutes. Because we service BOPs, we have the ability to test up to 25,000 pounds with our equipment. Nonetheless, when you are producing these pressures, you follow 34 JANUARY 2014 WorldWide Drilling Resource ®
