Multiple Uses for Your Down Hole Camera - Even a TV Series by Ray Roerick Sales Manager, Well-Vu, Inc. We all know TV cameras have been used underwater for over 50 years, but did you know you may already own one of these TV cameras that has brought science, technology, and entertainment to millions of people for so many years? It’s laying in your shop. The History Channel has a series called Monsterquest . Several years ago, a few curious underwater explorers de- cided they wanted to pursue the mys- tery/legend of the giant squid. You see, there was this theory a monster-sized Humboldt squid lurked at extreme depths off the coast of Mexico, but there was no proof; that is, until they decided to take a down hole video camera “fishing”. Why a down hole camera? Simple. They wanted durability, quality, and something that didn’t cost a fortune. Monsterquest took a look 1000 feet below the surface and took everyone on a journey through the ocean. In this series, scientists hooked a camera on a squid to explore unknown parts of the ocean. What they found was breath- taking. First they needed “bait”. The crew of scien- tists were able to capture a baby squid (unharmed, I might add). Working underwater so as to pro- tect the baby, they at- tached the small down hole video camera to its tail, and released it to swim back to the depths. It wasn’t long before the baby squid reached a depth of 900 feet and the first sighting took place. HUGE tentacles filled the screen. At 1000 feet, the camera recorded a giant squid, its huge beak attempting to bite or remove the camera from the little squid. It was up to 108 feet long; this would make it the largest squid filmed in history. Check out the incredible shots this underwater camera retrieved and see the giant squid that is now the biggest to ever be captured on film. It is avail- able on the Internet. Just go to History Channel and then follow the links to Monsterquest and the giant squid. Yes, the camera survived the depths and the bite from the giant squid, and went on to film the next series In Search of the Lock Ness Monster .
