29 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® JULY 2014 Through the Back Door! by Jim Kuebelbeck Dairy Farm Expansion Part 3 Holding the willow branch horizon- tally in front of him, Father Elmer walked in an ever-widening circle around the circle Dad had marked. At one point, he let the end of his dowsing rod dip toward the ground. He walked around that spot a number of times, and each time he crossed over that area, the tip of his dowsing rod seemed to be attracted toward the ground like a magnet. Finally, he came back over to where we were standing and said, “No Max, you don’t want to dig that well where you’ve got it marked. You’ll have to dig it over there.” The site he indicated was actually closer to the barn (and would require less digging by hand to get the water line into the barn later). Dad, however, was not about to be caught up in anything that might bring him any kind of ridicule, so he said, “Well, Father, if you think you know so much, then maybe you can tell me how deep we’re going to have to dig to get to the water.” Father Elmer looked at my dad and said, “Max, you won’t know that for sure until you dig this well, but maybe I can make a little guess.” With that, he walked back to the spot where his dowsing rod dipped toward the ground. Bending down, he began to bob his dowsing rod up and down as if he was counting something. My dad took the opportunity to once again glare at Ben. After awhile, Father Elmer stood up and walked back to where we were standing. “Max,” he said, “I think if you’ll dig down about 25 feet, you should have all the water you need.” Dad didn’t waste any words telling him all of the wells in the neighborhood were over 50 feet deep, and he doubt- ed any water would be found at 25 feet! “Father,” he said, “if you know so much, maybe you can also tell me how many rocks we’re going to find before we get to the water.” Father Elmer looked directly at my dad for a few uncomfortable seconds. Then he slowly reached down and picked up a few grains of sand. With only a grain or two on his fingertip, he held it out to my dad and said, “Max, if you look closely, ‘these’ are rocks! Now just what do you expect from a tired old priest?” “I mean ‘big’ rocks,” my dad stam- mered, making a big circle gesture with his arms. I looked at Ben, and didn’t think it was a good time for him to be grinning from ear to ear! Realizing he wasn’t going to be able to make a fool of this old priest after all and not wanting to provide anything additional for Ben’s nightly stories in the local saloon, Dad simply replied, “Okay Father, we’ll dig where you say and see what happens.” Once more he looked right at Ben, but Ben pretended not to notice. Dad then thanked Father Elmer for his “help”, but I could tell he was glad to see the taillights of Father Elmer’s car going back out of our driveway. Some days later, a great water sup- ply was encountered at 25 feet, and the well is still in use today. This personal experience many years ago is what gen- erated my initial (and continuing) interest in the age-old practice of water dowsing.
