WorldWide Drilling Resource
48 JULY 2014 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Technology Agreement Signed in Mexico Adapted from Information by GE Oil & Gas and the Mexico Institute of Petroleum A technology collaboration agree- ment has been signed by GE Oil & Gas, Mexico’s state-owned oil and gas compa- ny Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX), and the Mexico Institute of Petroleum (IMP). The agreement will initially research technology necessary for PEMEX to im- prove productivity and efficiency in mature onshore fields, as well as assistance in developing deepwater projects. As Mexico implements major energy reforms to expand development of the country’s offshore and onshore oil and gas re- serves, this collaboration will help ensure the technology to accomplish these goals is available. Under the pact, GE will collaborate with IMP, a public research organiza- tion providing technical solutions and training to PEMEX, on three specific technology areas including: • Improving the efficiency of a me- chanical flow device which could offer PEMEX significant recovery rate benefits in hundreds of wells. • Increasing the reliability of down hole equipment in the challenging on- shore oil fields operated by PEMEX. • Developing monitoring and inspec- tion technologies for subsea equip- ment, allowing PEMEX to develop deepwater projects in a safe and cost-effective way. LozoyaAustin, CEO for PEMEX said the agreement was signed in the con- text of the Energy Reform promoted by President Peña Nieto, and will strengthen the competitiveness of PEMEX. He also reiterated the institutional commitment to increase investment in human resources and technology. “Our technology collaboration agree- ment with GE Oil & Gas demonstrates our commitment to leverage the best solutions and expertise available to mod- ernize Mexico’s energy infrastructure,” said Vinicio Suro, CEO of IMP. “Energy reform, talent, and technology develop- ment offer significant opportunities to sup- port PEMEX and Mexico’s economy. Our agreement with GE is an important step forward in this goal.” João Geraldo Ferreira, president and CEO of GE Oil & Gas Latin America re- iterated the company’s dedication to the project. “GE is committed to Mexico, tech- nology innovation, and partnering with our customers on research and devel- opment,” he said. “By offering a wide array of oil and gas technologies, backed by our global network of research labs, we can help Mexico develop the energy re- sources and energy workforce needed for the 21st century.” This agreement will also help to add economic, social, and environmental value to PEMEX’s projects. Improving the productivity of wells should also re- duce the rate of natural decline and in- crease reserves.
