WorldWide Drilling Resource

61 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® JULY 2014 Reggie’s World by Reggie Stockert Buckeye BOP llc I received this e-mail regarding information on Cyclone Duo drill rigs recently. I would like to share limited information I recall with this particular piece of machinery. “REGGIE - I believe we talked about Cyclone rigs years ago. I have a ques- tion. Can you tell me the difference be- tween an IR [Ingersoll Rand] Cyclone 43R (ser-7114) and a 36 or 35? I can't find anything accurate on any of these machines. I can't find depths, how many feet of cable they spool, load rating of masts, etc. I tried to check with IR and present company who seem to own IR and Cyclone with no luck. As I remem- ber, you either owned some Cyclones or had worked with them. Any help or suggestions would real- ly help. To refresh your memory, I wanted to do some work on my land. Different formations would work better with a com- bination rig.” The difference between a Cyclone and an IR is the time frame in which they were built. The Sanderson Cyclone drill was manufactured in Orrville, Ohio. In my recollection, they would manu- facture from the turn of the century until around 1976-1977. At that point, the Ingersoll Rand Company bought the patent rights to the rotary rigs of the company’s assets. At the same time, Laibe Corporation bought the patent rights to the cable tool and experimen- tal drills on the drawing board at the time. Ingersoll Rand operated the Orrville, Ohio, plant until 1980 which they moved to Garland, Texas. The last vintage of the best duo drill, the TH6036, was in 1979. The 6036 was a full TH60 with all the pullback and rotation of the era. The 40 series started between the late 1930s and ran until the late 1950s. The higher the number, the bigger the capacity. For instance, 44, 42, and 40 were the numbers for the cable tool. No other drilling magazine covers events like WorldWide Drilling Resource ® .
