10 JUNE 2014 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Safety Spotlight: The First Aid Kit by Scott Cosby This month, we’ll examine the ideal first aid kit for drill crews in the field. Topics will include: a basic definition, contents, and container types for a proper first aid kit. A first aid kit is a col- lection of supplies and equipment for use in giving first aid, and can be put together by an individual or organization, or purchased as a complete kit. There’s a wide variety of contents for first aid kits based on the type of activity, knowl- edge, and experience of those putting the kit together. The typical first aid kit contents in- clude: adhesive bandages, regular strength pain medication, gauze, tape, scissors, and antiseptic or alcohol pads. Specialized first aid kits are available for specific activities, which focus on risks or concerns related to the activity. An eyewash kit should also be included in the drilling crew first aid kit to take care of any chemical spray or foreign objects in the eyes. A cell phone with emergency numbers should be an addi- tional, necessary item for a field first aid kit. Check the first aid kits regularly - at least every three months - to be sure the contents are aseptic, and replace those items which have expired. The first aid kit container for the field should be light, easy-to-carry, and accessible. It should be big enough to hold all the basic supplies. Standard kits often come in durable plastic boxes, fabric pouches, or in wall-mounted cabi- nets. The type of container will vary depending on purpose, and they range in size from wallet through to large rucksacks. It is recommended that all kits are in a clean, waterproof container to keep the contents safe and aseptic. Consult your local health profes- sional or American Red Cross for more information, and further inform your drilling crews on this topic to keep them safe in the field. There are also wide varieties of sources online concerning this topic. Additionally, consider taking a first aid course through the American Red Cross.
