Here we have a common situation in mines where flexible drop pipe is absolutely the ideal solution. Open-pit mines have issues with internal scaling, corrosion, and regular pump failures; and are in remote locations. When calculating the cost of a well, the life costs need to be kept in mind. These include all the costs associated with operating the well. In this case, the pumps are removed every four months as there is considerable internal buildup of calcium carbonate. Externally, the steel pipe below water level corrodes within a couple of years. The site and water conditions are aggressive and, with these wells form- ing part of a larger dewatering system designed to keep the pit dry, safe, and stable, we cannot take any chances. The first step is the removal of the rigid column followed by the reinstalla- tion of the pump on flexible drop pipe. The flexible pipe is laid on the ground away from the well. The cable straps are inserted into the pipe rib and the power cable is supported along the entire length. The pump and power cable are attached. The lifting clamp grips the flexible drop pipe, and we are ready to install. All 600 feet of flexible pipe will be installed in one continuous length. No corrosion, quick and easy set- ting and pulling pumps, and safety con- cerns all contributed to one happy mine! Another job completed efficiently for now and in the future.
