WorldWide Drilling Resource
36 MARCH 2014 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Reggie’s World by Reggie Stockert Buckeye BOP llc This is part two of last month's arti- cle of production reports in the Utica Shale in surrounding counties close to where I live, as published by our local news- paper, The Times Reporter . Gulfport Energy had the highest pro- ducing wells for both oil and natural gas during the third quarter 2013. The state released quarterly produc- tion numbers on horizontal shale wells for the first time this year. During the third quarter, 245 wells reported production, while another 40 wells were waiting on pipeline connec- tions and reported no production, accord- ing to a release from ODNR (Ohio Department of Natural Resources). Combined, those 245 wells produced 1.33 million barrels of oil and 33.6 bil- lion cubic feet of natural gas, a figure which includes natural gas liquids. In- dividually, the producing wells averaged: • 5439 barrels of oil • 137 million cubic feet of natural gas • 55 days of production Tom Stewart, executive vice presi- dent of the Ohio Oil and Gas Association, said the numbers were in the expected range and show the Utica Shale is pri- marily a natural gas play. "You don't see any big oil wells that just have residual gas, but you see many big gas wells that just have residual oil," Stewart stated. Gulfport Energy had the highest producing wells for either oil or natural gas during the quarter. The Oklahoma City-based drilling company’s Boy Scout well in Harrison County produced 41,617 barrels of oil over 70 days. It also pro- duced 135 million cubic feet of natural gas. Gulfport's Stutzman well in Belmont County produced 1.25 billion cubic feet of natural gas over 89 days, along with 22 barrels of oil. "I think that it means this is a very good play, these are very good gas wells," Stewart remarked. "The process- ing capacity that's being built up and down eastern Ohio signals that the mid- stream industry believes that there is opportunity here." Still, it's hard to tell the quality of any oil and gas well based upon a month or so of production. "Ask me two years from now," Stewart said. This is the first time ODNR has released quarterly data on well produc- tion, as a result of a law change includ- ed in the state budget. Data for the first and second quarters of 2013 will be released in late winter or early spring of 2014, according to ODNR Spokesman Mark Bruce. "It's good to know what's produc- ing and where as far as us making sure we have enough inspectors in the area to monitor those wells as they're being drilled and they're being put into pro- duction," said Bruce, leaving interpre- tation of the numbers to others. As I make my travels, we're begin- ning to see the widespread infrastruc- ture being built and the gentle push of things to come.
