The Winning GEFCO/ WWDR Scholarship is Announced by Bonnie Love, Editor WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Each year, when we announce the WWDR scholarship to attend the GEFCO Annual Resource Drilling Fundamentals Training Seminar, we are thrilled to read the essays from around the world. This year’s winner, Dylan Logan hails from Bakersfield, California; and here is his win- ning essay: I would like to attend the specialized training event held by GEFCO , so I can learn valuable drilling information which I can apply to work in the San Joaquin Valley in central California, where droughts and lowering water tables are a major issue for farmers and dairymen, along with people who rely on domestic wells for their source of water. I hope to learn the fundamentals and methods which are invaluable to the water well industry. I hope to learn dif- ferent types of drilling, rotary, reverse rotary, and cable tool. I also hope to learn the different bits used to drill through different materials such as rock and granite and soils. I also hope to learn the charts, tables, and formulas which go into the process of drilling water wells. This course would benefit me by giv- ing me knowledge that will allow me to pursue opportunities of working at water well drilling companies, and the eventual goal of owning my own water well pump and drilling company in central California. It would benefit my employer with me being knowledgeable in my field of work, which would allow me to perform better and set the company apart from others by having trained employees with learning experiences presented by GEFCO like no other has the opportunity for. It would benefit the industry with me learning all of the necessary practice and information in the water well drilling indus- try which would allow me to supply farms and dairies with plentiful ag water for irrigation and homes and cities with clean, pure, plentiful domestic water. I am 17 yea r s o l d and f r om Bakersfield, Cal ifornia. Logan being the first in the family to start a water well drilling and pump business in Modesto, California, in the 1940s. My great-grand- father and his brothers worked for him for many years, with my great grandfather starting the day after he returned from active duty in the Pacific, [during] World War II. My father is the owner of CJ Logan Pump & Electric in Bakersfield, California, and I [have] worked for him since I was a young boy. I hope to learn about wa t e r we l l dri l l ing and get back into the business with a large demand in the cent ral valley in California where water is a major issue. ~ Dylan J.
