50 MARCH 2014 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® GE Oil & Gas Launches Training Collaboration Adapted from a Press Release by GE Oil & Gas A new competency development training collaboration focussed on edu- cating the next generation of engineers and other technical workers for the global oil and gas industry has been launched by GE Oil & Gas and Kuwait Oil Company (KOC). As part of the training program, ten KOC mechanical engineers completed the extensive Competency Development Training Path covering all rotating equip- ment technologies, as well as control and vibration monitoring systems. GE devel- oped the customized path through its var- ious training centers in Europe. The program covered an estimated 100 training days over a six-month peri- od. Half of the training included hands- on work on GE’s line of gas turbines and centrifugal compressors - in addition to vibration and condition monitoring sys- tems. KOC is confident the candidates will be able to adapt themselves to han- dle non-GE machinery as well with the theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience acquired during this training. “This successful first program rep- resents the kickoff of our forward-looking framework in which both KOC and GE will cooperate on future opportunities in human capital development,” said Hamed Al-Mutairi, KOC’s manager of operations for east Kuwait. The next steps of their collaboration will focus on replicating the blended train- ing approach by integrating theoretical and practical sessions on rotating equip- ment, vibration monitoring systems, and control systems by utilizing the advanced tools and equipment for practical training at GE’s facilities. The participants will receive their completion certificates during a gradua- tion ceremony in Kuwait. GE and KOC also will have the opportunity to begin for- malizing their training cooperation agree- ment for the future. Training initiatives such as this one will play a vital role in the future of the industry. Recent statistics indicate up to 50% of the oil and gas sector’s engineers will be eligible to retire over the next sev- eral years. According to Rami Qasem, president and CEO for GE Oil & Gas, MENAT region, “The global oil and gas industry faces a growing talent gap as more of today’s workforce retires, creating a de- mand for a new generation of workers with the skills to address the world’s 21 st century energy chal- lenges. Developing a highly t rained workforce is a top priority.... This ini- tiative represents our biggest training ag r eemen t wi t h KOC for total dura- tion, range of equip- ment, level of customization on topics covered, and the assessment and mon- itoring of the technical skills improvement.” The company introduced its YEP (young engineers panel) program in 2012.
