j Credit standards apply Property owners cannot have late or missed payment history. If the property is sold, it can be paid off or transferred to the new owner. Closed-loop geothermal heat pumps must have coefficient of performance of 3.6 in heating and 17.1 in cooling. (Less for water-to-water units.) Other energy-efficient systems also qualify. On top of this, homeowners may receive the 30% federal tax credit and other rebate incentives, and might find themselves with extra cash in April. Whether they can borrow addition- ally at this good rate from other sources remains to be seen. Many banks and heat pump companies offer lending too, and our state of Connecticut’s Clean Energy Fund will have a new geother- mal loan program out next year also. Just as public facilities are built by municipal bonds; colleges, businesses, and vehicles are financed; and homes are bought with mortgages; now ground source energy systems can proliferate too. Inc. Desander cones eventually wear out and need to be replaced. If your desander cones are not performing the way they did before, and more liquid is coming from the cones than sand, it may be time for an inspection. The crucial task of inspecting de- sander cones can be easily accom- plished. Here’s how: a Remove cones from the mani- fold. a Remove the clamp that bands the top and bottom half of the cones together. The two halves will split apart. a Look inside the bottom half to- ward the output nozzle. If you see grooves or wear, it may be time to replace your desander cones. The top half of the cone will also show wear around the outside edges near the input jet. When sand enters the cone at the right psi, the pressure creates centrifu- gal force which pushes the heavier sand to the outside of the cone. This pres- sure forces sand down the smooth sides of the cone. Ideally, the lighter, clean mud goes back up the center of the cone, and into the tank. Over time, as the sand swirls around, it carves grooves on the inside of the top and bottom of the desander cone. These grooves disrupt the centrifugal flow of sand causing it to be mixed back in with clean mud. When this hap- pens, your cones have lost their effi- ciency and may need to be replaced. The eight-page article is summed up best by a heat pump company ad five pages later, saying ASHRAE’s 400- foot-deep, drilled closed-loop geothermal system delivers 44% energy savings per square foot compared to variable refrig- erant flow, air sourced. As it becomes more mainstream, ground source energy is being recognized as a great investment, and agencies as well as financing institutions are stepping up to the plate to help. No longer is geo- thermal only for those who can afford to pay the initial up-front capital cost all at once. Our state electric companies par- ticipate in a national program that works like this: The homeowner receives an esti- mate for the inside heat pump and out- side loop costs. He or she applies, and receives quick approval. The approved drilling and heating and cooling contrac- tors provide information about the project. The homeowner signs a note, and the program lender immediately pays the contractor upon completion confirmation. Future electric bills are modified to accept additional monthly payment less than or equal to the energy saved value.
