of the things you should not say, let’s talk about what you should say. Great job. - This simple phrase can accomplish a lot. No need to throw a “Hooray for Bob” parade, just two simple words can show you appreciate their work and you have no problem giving credit where credit is due. Remember, it’s ok to let those you lead outshine you. After all, if they shine bright enough, they reflect well on you as their leader. I believe we can do this. - Em- powerment is one of the best motivators. When you express belief in your team, you give them the power to do their best. Apprehension and doubts fade into trust- ing your belief they can accomplish the task at hand. I was wrong. - No one likes uttering those words, it can be one of the hardest statements to make as a leader. Just re- member, being a leader does not mean you are perfect, we all make mistakes. Hearing about the mistake from you will encourage trust and respect. Respect, appreciation, and trust are things everyone wants to experience on the jobsite - and none of them can be accomplished without effective commu- nication. Phrases that can Make or Break your Company Compiled by Bonnie Love, Editor WorldWide Drilling Resource ® The drilling industry is unique in many ways, but communication is important no matter what industry you are in. Effective communication between leaders and crew members can keep the jobsite running smoothly. Those who feel respected and appreciated are more pro- ductive and more likely to stay with the company. Here are examples of what leaders should NOT to say to employees. Don’t reinvent the wheel. - Think about it, if no one had reinvented the wheel, your rigs would be running on round rocks for wheels, Flintstones style. We already tried that. - This is the quickest way to discourage your employ- ees and stifle communication. Technology in the drilling industry is constantly chang- ing, so what didn’t work a few years ago, may be very successful now. Give it a try. Don’t come to me with a problem unless you have a solution. - This state- ment can really backfire on you. Just be- cause employees don’t know how to solve a problem, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Postponed projects, delayed decisions, and buried issues can cause even more problems. Keep those lines of communi- cation open and encourage people to mention problems, regardless. Just get it done. - How many times have you heard this phrase? It can cer- tainly lead to a project being completed quicker, but it can also lead to cutting corners. Instead of adding pressure to de- liver at all costs, find out what your team actually needs to get the job done right. If you don’t like this job, there are plenty of people who will take it. - Boy, talk about a morale killer. Everyone likes to feel appreciated, not threatened. If an employee feels they can be replaced in the blink of an eye, they may also be think- ing of replacing you as an employer just as quickly. This means going through the costly process of hiring and training someone new for the position.
