The name is derived from Kimberley, South Africa, where the rock contains diamonds. Kinetic Metamorphism - The defor- mation of rocks without chemical recon- stitution or recrystallization to form new minerals. Klintite - Biohermal limestone, particu- larly the massive core. Knob - A rounded hill or mountain, espe- cially an isolated one. Knob-and-Kettle Topography - A land surface with several kettle holes sepa- rated by round hills of glacial till. Knoll - A small, rounded hill. KREEP - Acronym for a basaltic lunar rock type first discovered in Apollo 12 breccas containing an unusually high amount of potassium (K) rare earth elements (REE), and phosphorus (P). Kyanite - A blue or light green triclinic mineral. It occurs in long-bladed crystals and crystalline aggregates in schists, gneisses, and granite pegmatites. It is used to manufacture refractories (heat- resistant materials). L Labile - Rocks and minerals which are easily decomposed. Labradorite -Afeldspar mineral of the pla- gioclase series which has equal amounts The Upsata Lake Waterfowl Production Area is located in the knob-and-kettle topography of the Blackfoot River watershed in Montana. Photo courtesy of fws.gov of sodium and calcium. It is common in igneous rocks with low silica content. Ladder Vein - Short, regularly spaced, roughly parallel fractures traversing dikes from wall to wall. Their width is restricted to the width of the dike, but may extend great distances along it. Lahar - A landslide or mudflow of pyro- clastic material on the flank of a volcano. Lamina - The thinnest recognizable layer in a sediment or sedimentary rock, differ- ing from other layers in either color, com- position, or particle size. Laminated Quartz - Vein quartz contain- ing slabs, blades, or laminar films of other material. Lamprophyre - Dark gray to black intru- sive igneous rocks generally occurring as dikes (tabular bodies inserted in fissures). These rocks are characterized by a porphyritic (fine-grained) texture in which large crystals of dark, iron-magnesium minerals are enclosed in a fine-grained to dense groundmass.
