WorldWide Drilling Resource
Mark Mark E. U.S. Oil and Gas Professionals in Demand Adapted from Information from Rigzone The recent oil and gas boom in the U.S. has led to a hiring boom for the industry; however, recruitment for the industry is becoming a bigger challenge. In a recent Rigzone study, nearly 42% of hiring managers said the time to hire has lengthened primarily due to the inability to find qualified professionals to fill open positions. This is giving today’s oil and gas professional a unique advantage, which companies are having a difficult time working with. Potential employees are asking companies for more money, and nearly half of companies say jobs are going unfilled since they can’t match the compensation for a position with the ex- pectations of the candidates. “Oil and gas professionals today recognize the energy job market is theirs for the taking,” said Paul Caplan, pres- ident of Rigzone. “It’s up to companies to offer the right position for the right com- pensation package or risk losing candi- dates to firms and industries competing for the same in-demand talent.” When companies find the right per- son for a position, they act quickly. According to a third of hiring managers, once a position is budgeted, it takes less than a month to extend an offer to an oil and gas professional. According to more than 25% of companies, the issue is an increasing number of candidates are re- jecting offers. Once an oil and gas professional accepts a job, they are likely to experi- ence stability most industries can’t offer, with only 11% of companies expecting layoffs this year. Adding to the upswing, is the fact 49% of hiring managers are expecting to hire more full-time workers this year as compared to 2013; 34% expect a rise in contract hiring; and 25% anticipate hiring more oil and gas professionals who work on a rotational schedule.
