Last month we talked about grapevines and copycats, and to my delight, an avid reader did in fact “drop me a line”. I’m happy to say Steve Kaser, Drilling Product Mgr., with Forge Pacific LLC did just that. “Subject: MORE TO THINK ABOUT Miss Ronnie, I just finished reading your August “More to Think About” editorial and you asked for an answer so thought I would give an answer about “copycats” as you called them. After being in the drilling industry for some 44 years I find myself somewhat of a dinosaur along with a few others still working in our industry who are closing in the end of their long careers. You see there are few individuals entering the drilling distribution market anymore that actually have rig time under their belt and have spent the time it takes to become knowledge- able. For the most part, they are as I once was many years ago, uneducated as to drilling, drill rigs, and tooling. Most importantly, they lack the relationship one builds over the years with the drilling community. That is the answer I have for you Ronnie, Relationships!. That is why ‘so many cannot think for themselves to come up with anything that will really improve themselves or the company…on their own’ as you so perfectly stat- ed. Everything one company or individual can sell other companies can copy or duplicate, however; a relationship established over time and earned, is impossible to imitate. Therefore companies only copy that which can be copied and never really attain the same level of success. In most cases they only achieve ‘wannabe’ status.” When asked if I could reprint his comments, he said: “Well, yes if you think it worthy to print then go ahead.
