Focus on AWWDA It will soon be t ime to head to AWWDA’s (Alberta Water Well Drilling A s s o c i a t i o n ’ s ) 2015 Convention and Trade Show April 23-25, 2015. It will again be held at the Sheraton Hotel & Conference Center in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. Expect to have a great time visiting f r iends and making new connections, and get up- dates on reg- ulations and vital information for your business... ...see the displays ( WWDR will be there!) of products necessary for your continued success... ...and get an up-close look at the equipment. Plus, there’s entertainment! Call Carol at 780-386-2335 or e-mail: awwda@xplornet.com The head works, with the hose con- nected, was secured to a backhoe at the other end. The backhoe drove toward the well, allowing gravity to pull the hose over the roller into the casing. This process was complete in just minutes. It makes for a great story, but it isn’t over yet. Here is what Al stated in his thank-you letter: “With the initial installation, we ran the pump only a couple of days when the motor stopped. It tested as a dead short in the motor. When we pulled out the pump, we found the pump supplier had assembled it wrong and a wire shorted out. We in- stalled a new motor and put the pump back in the well. Our very first experi- ence with your hose was a good one. If we had steel pipe, the pump people would have had to take it up and put it back down. With the hose design, we could do that ourselves saving time and money. Using the hose design is the only way to go, especially with deep wells.” Sure worked out better than han- dling 56 sticks of 20-foot-long rigid pipe, three times. The Wikipedia definition of gleaning is: the act of collecting leftover crops from farmers' fields after they have been commercially harvested or on fields where it is not economically profitable to har- vest. Some ancient cultures promoted gleaning as an early form of a welfare system. Gleanings for the Hungry (from their Web site) is: “a Christian, non-profit organization. It operates as a mercy ministry arm of Youth With A Mission. Our mission is to help feed the hungry of the world both spiritually and physi- cally.” Water is a necessary component for this charitable work. They had a well in California that required a pump set at 1133 feet deep, and money was def- initely a serious consideration. Under- standing the cause, 1133 feet of 1-inch flexible drop pipe was donated for the project. It carries a 50-year warranty for standard water wells, and this pro- vided additional peace of mind. Also, ease of installation and retrieval would prove to be more beneficial than initially imagined. Al oversaw the project. The entire installation was performed by volunteers who had never worked with flexible drop pipe. The hose was laid out in a straight line from the wellhead. The pump and motor, fittings, and power cable were se- cured to the poly- urethane hose. A forklift was used to lift the pump, motor, and shroud to set into the casing. There was a rolling wheel fastened between the two forks. A historic test drive took place on April 19, 1882. What was it? See page 69 to find out!
