Play: Not Just for Kids Anymore Adapted from Information Provided by mindful.org and npr.org When it comes to being happy, adults often forget a simple, but impor- tant pastime: playing. For children, recess is one of the most important parts of the school day. It’s a time when many kids learn the fine arts of socializing, testing their boundaries, and getting exercise while playing. Research is increasingly show- ing that healthy play leads to healthy adulthood; but growing up shouldn’t mean the end of playtime. Play is described as a flexible state of mind where you are presently engaged in some freely chosen and potentially purposeless activity you find interesting, enjoyable, and satisfying. It is done for its own sake. It takes you out of a sense of time, and the act or experience of play it- self means more than the outcome. In your own life, consider what play means to you. It’s generally something you’ve been wanting to do, but your mind said wasn’t important enough. Maybe you’d like to pick up the camera more often, reconnect with old friends, read a juicy book, or show that crossword puz- zle who’s boss. In our culture where working is so highly prized, playing around is often seen as a luxury. Doing good work is of utmost importance, but that doesn’t mean playing is completely unproductive. Research actually reveals those who integrate play into their lives are more likely to run the mazes of life more effi- ciently and creatively with less stress. Adults can benefit from creating space for playtime in their lives, even if their brains are saying there are more im- portant things to do. If you need a really good reason to add more play to your life, consider this: playing keeps you sharp. While you’re placing those SCRABBLE ® tiles on the board, you just might be refining your memory and thinking skills. So go ahead, make room for play in your life and have fun.
