A few years back, we received a cal l from a gentleman who “threw me for a loop” per se. After he told me his name, he said he was involved with ichthyology [pronounced “ik-thee-ol-uh-jee”] in Southern Florida and he was working with the Florida Museum of Natural History. That one caught me off guard for a minute, until I had him give me a short explanation of what it meant and what he was doing. Come to find out, ichthyology is the study of fishes. This includes gathering information about both extant and extinct fish species and their behavior. Finally, we had something in common, sort of, seeing how I have spent most of my free time trying to catch them. (Though I did not tell him this.) His passion was studying sharks off the Florida coast. He spent a lot of time underwater and was tracking sharks with a small tracking device or “pinger”. He was interested in having a camera tethered to a cable so he could conserve his air tanks by doing a lot of the observation from his boat and recording it. Then, when the appropriate time came and he wanted to be “up close and personnel” in the shark habitat, he could don his air tanks and go underwater to further gather information. Fortunately, his needs were not so different from our industry. He had several concerns: cable strength, signal type, and of course the camera’s ability to withstand the pressure at 200-300 feet. It didn’t take long for him to realize the benefit, and he ordered a basic unit he was going to connect to his laptop in his boat. I only heard back from him once after that, with a question of extra power or battery, which was easily resolved by having him purchase a deep cycle marine battery, and all he said was, “I love the fish camera you sold me.” Ray Ray Roerick may be contacted via e-mail at michele@worldwidedrillingresource.com Hace unos años, recibimos una llamada de un señor que me sorprendió en sí.
