My colleague Kathy Heinrich and I left the Rapid City Airport with a certain destination in mind. She had been there before, though it was cloudy and hard to see on her previous trip; but this was my first time visiting South Dakota. It would be our only chance to see Mount Rushmore before going back home to Florida. Once we arrived, the first thing I saw was a family of mountain goats leisurely munching on grass. They weren’t concerned about tourists like me busily coming and going. They just kept on chewing like we all belonged there. I’ve seen it so many times on screen and in books, but there I was really seeing it for the first time. Standing on the Avenue of Flags below those iconic eyes of stone, I couldn’t help but feel proud of our country. The stone monument told a story about a new nation’s struggle for freedom, one that should never be taken for granted. Leaving Mount Rushmore with feelings of gratitude for this side trip and the beautiful weather, we continued on toward our final destination; but maybe there was still time for one more detour before dark. Up a winding side road in Deadwood, Mount Moriah Cemetery peacefully over- looks the place formerly known as the Wild West. It is the final resting place of American legends. Among the famous and infamous names written in stone are Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok. Something about these two rough and rowdy characters still causes people to stop and take notice.
