Read on... 59 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® AUGUST 2015 Tunneling for Modern Catacombs in Jerusalem Compiled by Amy White, Associate Editor WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Jerusalem is the world’s most popular destination for Jewish burials. With space in high demand and short supply, the city needed a solution to the growing problem of where to bury all those longing for eternal rest within its limits. Sometimes you have to go back and revisit ancient customs to move forward. The catacombs of Paris and Rome became inspiration for two enormous burial tunnels currently being constructed under the Har Hamenuchot Cemetery near the western entrance to Jerusalem. As fate would have it, not only is Jerusalem the place of choice for burial for Jews around the globe, the soil is also very suitable for digging, according to a city burial official. The two tunnels are the first of their kind in present-day Israel. Planners believe modern catacombs may soon be the preferred burial option in crowded cities like Jerusalem, or at least the only feasible one in the delicate balance of economy, faith, and space. Drilling equipment is currently boring away beneath Jerusalem. The New York Times reported a group of visitors were taken into the first tunnels which were already wide enough for two tractor-trailers to fit inside. The ambitious project is moving ahead under the supervision of Rolzur Tunneling Company, experts in the industry. The company’s prior experience includes construction of tunnels for the Jerusalem Tel Aviv rail line, as well as the Arazim Tunnels. The drilling machine boring through the earth below Jerusalem was described as “a beast with a brain” guided by computers following laser lines. According to designers, tunnel- ing is ideal for constructing burial plots since tunnels can be established at different angles and heights, making the potential virtually limitless.
