WorldWide Drilling Resource
10 JANUARY 2015 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Important OSHA Change! adapted from Information by the u.S. Department of Labor Beginning January 1, 2015, employ- ers will be required to report all work- related fatalities to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) within eight hours. Employers will also be re- quired to report all in-patient hospital- izations, amputations, and losses of an eye within 24 hours of finding out about the incident. Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels said, "OSHA will now receive crucial reports of fatalities and severe work-related injuries and illness- es that will significantly enhance the agency’s ability to target our resources to save lives and prevent further injury and illness. This new data will enable the agency to identify the workplaces where workers are at the greatest risk and target our compliance assistance and enforce- ment resources accordingly." The updated reporting requirements will enable employers and workers to prevent future injuries by identifying and eliminating the most serious workplace hazards. Employers have three options for reporting these severe incidents to OSHA: 1. They can call their nearest area office during normal business hours. 2. Call the 24-hour OSHA hotline at 1-800-321-OSHA (1-800-321-6742). 3. Report the incident online at: osha.gov/report_onl ine. All employers covered by the Occupational Safety and Health Act, even those who are exempt from maintaining injury and illness records, are required to comply with OSHA's new severe injury and illness report- ing requirements.
