When core drilling through boulders, wood, concrete, or man-made debris, conventional drills have a hard time get- ting the augers to penetrate. This is where sonic drilling can make a difference. Sonic drilling uses high-frequency vibration and low-speed rotational motion along with downward pressure to ad- vance the cutting edge of a circular drill string. The drill string, which acts like a flywheel, delivers a tremendous amount of energy directly to the bit. This vibratory action allows the bit to cut, shear, frac- ture, or displace the material in its path. Introduced in 1996, Gus Pech’s Brat- A-Sonic drill has been improving pene- tration rates for nearly 20 years. It is able to recover large-diameter (4 to12-inch), continuous core samples, which are very accurate.
