Oil/Water Exploration by Harold White On a mountain where the wells have been very poor, some less than three gallons per minute (gpm), I was called to do a well location. They needed enough water for a house and small garden. Most loan companies won’t loan money to builders or buyers of homes if the well does not produce at least three gpm for four hours; most want five gpm or better. This seems like a very small amount. You would think the ground- water would seep into the well faster than that, but it doesn’t. I looked around and found a good location and drilled it. The well produced about 25 gpm, which is more than they expected, and they were happy with it. They said it was the best producing well in the area. This was about ten years ago. Now, the property has been subdi- vided and the owner wants a good well on her acreage. So we went out to find a well site. In the process, I asked where she wanted her house, where the near- est electric power source was, and where she wanted the well to be. She said there was an old well close to where she wanted to have a new well, but it wouldn’t even pump one gpm. There was electricity, plumbing, a filter system, and pressure tank in the pump house, along with some large holding tanks. She wanted to know if I could find a place close to them that could produce ten gpm. I looked at the place the well was drilled, and I could see it was drilled about 60 feet from where it should have been drilled. So I told the young lady I saw a place nearby that looked like it would probably do better. We were drilling the well a week or so later, and had just gone down about 100 feet when the girl said she had been informed we were not on her property. She had previously been told this was part of her property, but it was not. She said we would have to move to her property and start over. We asked who did own the proper- ty we were drilling on, and made a deal to finish the well. It produced 45 gpm, and is now the best well on the moun- tain. We will drill the young lady’s well next spring. The statements and comments in this article are based on information and references believed to be true and factual.
