The world will only have a generation of idiots.” Albert Einstein Is Google making us stupid? New technology has altered our reading habits and, more unsettlingly, how we think and process information. Which one of these statements is true? 1. The steady march of technology is creating an epidemic of stupidity. 2. The steady march of technology is steadily ruining our lives by deplet- ing our privacy and weakening our personal security. I wish I had the answer, because depending on whom you speak to, both are true. Is Albert Einstein turning in his grave because of the way we interact today? Interactions now come second to playing with our digital devices. What do you think? Are we a gener- ation of idiots yet? Do we still have time before we get there, or was Einstein wrong? Last week while at dinner at a local restaurant, I counted at every table at least one person was on their iPhone or iPad. At one table, a couple were both texting, so I asked them, "Are you tex- ting each other?" Flying home from a business trip last month I noticed the first thing every- one did after we landed was turn on their phone. Come on - can't it wait? One guy sitting next to me had over 100 apps on his phone, so I asked him, "Do you have an app on your phone for how to talk to people?" Needless to say, he didn't enjoy my company. I could go on for pages with this stuff, but I'm sure you need to get to your phone so you can find out what the weather is in Alaska, or what your 5000 friends (and I say friends very loosely) on Facebook had for lunch. But wait...there is more...just kid- ding...but let me ask you before I lose you...are you letting technology have a negative impact on any of your relation- ships - customers, employees, family??
