Due to these regula- tions, it is not possible to completely fill all of the country’s reported working storage capacity. Experts doubt the U.S. will get that close to running out of space for oil. Rob Merriam, who tracks oil supplies for the EIA said some of the current oil surplus is seasonal. With the arrival of summer, more people will be driving cars, more refineries will be up and running, and storage tanks should become less full as a result. All Pumped Up and Nowhere to Go? Compiled by Amy White, Associate Editor WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Between February and March 2015, the amount of crude oil in U.S. storage tanks grew by an average of 6.85 mil- lion barrels a week. According to the EIA (U.S. Energy Admini st rat ion) , inventories have reached an 80-year high. Are we running out of space to store oil? According to professional sources, probably not. U.S. working storage capacity is 521 million barrels according to the most re- cent data. As of March 2015, 449 million barrels were in storage. Storage utilization can be difficult to calculate since the EIA’s reported inven- tory levels also include crude oil which is not being held in storage tanks. For example, of the 449 million barrels “in storage” referenced above, approximately 120 million barrels are in pipelines, on ships, or held locally in production areas. An of ten-ci ted example in the American oil storage space debate is Cushing, Oklahoma. The 70.8 million barrels of storage capacity in Cushing represent over 60% o f a l l c r u d e o i l wo r k i ng s t o r age c a p a c i t y i n t h e Midwest, and around 19% of all crude oil storage in the nation. Inventory levels at Cushing are at their record high; howev- er, storage utiliza- tion (inventories as a percent of work- ing storage capaci- ty) are not at record levels since work- ing storage capacity has also increased over time. According to the latest avail- able data, Cushing is near 77% of its capacity utilization, a significant increase from a low of 27% in October 2014. However, in March 2011 , u t i l i za t i on reached 91%.
