His lecture, Seeing Things Differently: Rethinking the Relationship between Data and Models explores how the practice of hydrology depends on com- puter models, while at the same time, new methods have been adapted or developed for characterizing and mon- itoring the subsurface. He notes these two areas evolved almost completely in- dependently of one another, and says a unified approach is needed - designing m e a s u r e m e n t methods in the con- text of numerical analyses which ad- dress specific scientific and manage- ment questions. The lecture overview of the relation- ships among models, measurement, and decisions will include a discussion about what is actually being measured when measurements are made, focusing on the large scale, from pumping tests to geophysics. Descriptions of how these measurements are being merged with methods, and how the process can be improved will be presented. Dr. Ferré also covers how hydrogeologists can turn the standard approach around by using models to help identify more in- formative measurements.
