WorldWide Drilling Resource
46 MARCH 2015 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Ph.D. Students to Study Geothermal Potential Adapted from Information by Cheshire East Council and Keele University The Cheshire East district of England is eager to discover whether they can generate long-term, renewable energy fromgeothermal resources. To better under- stand the issue, the Cheshire East Council has decided to provide a grant through its recently formed partnership with Keele University, for research purposes. Ph.D. students at the University will conduct a study into the technical and economic aspects of drilling wells nearly 16,500 feet deep and extracting geother- mal-heated water at temperatures around 212ºF (100ºC). The British Geological Survey iden- tified the Cheshire Basin, near Crewe, as one of six potential deep geothermal re- sources in the United Kingdom (UK). Experts believe it is possible to generate about 100 gigawatt hours a year within about a mile of the proposed site in the Leighton West area of Crewe. Together, Cheshire East and Keele will research low-carbon energy solutions across the council’s energy framework and geothermal project. Keele University’s Professor Mark Ormerod said, "Keele has a very strong commitment to promoting sustainability and it is embedded in all our teaching, research, business, and community engagement activities. This partnership with Cheshire East, focusing on research and knowledge exchange into sustain- able and low-carbon energy, is a really positive and exciting development, with real potential to deliver significant envi- ronmental and economic benefits to the region." Officers, faculty members, and stu- dents from the university will work closely together; the council will support students working on live projects. The partnership will help the coun- cil be at the leading edge of the latest energy technology and sustainable ener- gy projects. It will also provide access to research-based funding to advance the work of the council to achieve its energy vision and its residents-first approach. Professor Peter Styles, of applied and environmental geophysics at Keele University said, “This partnership will pro- vide an exciting, long-term opportunity for developing truly innovative research. There are significant scientific and com- mercial benefits to the collaboration, and I can see the region being at the forefront of renewable energy research in the very near future.” 2014 Las Vegas Dealmakers Albin with Pulstar Mfg./Preferred Pump & Equipment of Dodge, Nebraska, congratulates Frank of F.P.I.
