The “Idiots” Corner by “Billy Bob Smith” This month, I thought I would share some of the really dumb things I have seen managers do with consistency. A fewmonths ago, I was attending a company management staff meeting when the CEO said, “Look folks, I’m tired of hearing bad news. If you don’t have any good news, well then keep the bad news to yourself.” I was recently observing an employee interview being con- ducted by a human resources manager. At the end of the inter- view (about an hour long) she said, “Well, we’ll get back to you if we have an interest.” The issue here was the candidate did very little talking. The manager dominated the conversation. So I ask you, what is she going to base her decision on? I recently attended a convention and overheard two CEOs talking about their lagging sales. One of them said, “I just don’t get it. This used to be one of our most popular products, but lately no one is buying it.” The other gent asked, “Why do you think this is the situation?” His response, “The market just doesn’t seem interested any- more and for the life of me I can’t figure out why.” Here’s a classic one: Manager one - “Why does this employee keep acting this way?” Manager two - “I don’t know. He’s been acting this way for several months now.” Manager one - “Have you discussed this with him?” Manager two - “No.” DUH - - - HELLO - - - WAKE UP, DUDE! A lot of organizations are going through mergers, acquisitions, downsizing, etc. and the common issue for all of them is their inability or unwillingness to change or adjust. For example: Company Amerged with Company B and they are both in the shipping and logistics industry. Company A is ahead of the curve when it comes to the utilization of technology, but Company B is behind the curve. So the chal- lenge is to get the new organization on the same page, but here’s the problem, half of the employees are accustomed to the old ways and now they are being asked to change. What do you think is the outcome? Well, let me tell you - it can take years to get everyone on the same page after any significant change in culture. Okay, one more - An organization lost its sales manager due to retirement and had to replace him. Their hiring pol- icy was to always promote from within, but they didn’t have any salesperson who had the proper experience to take over the position. So, what did they do? They promoted their best salesperson to the position, losing their best sales re- source and creating chaos in the sales department due to his lack of manage- ment experience. Their assumption - he’s our best rep, so he will make a good sales manager. Folks - don’t you get it?
