You Can Help Your Customers - or Get New Ones! Adapted from Information Provided by Southeast Rural Community Assistance Project As a well drilling professional, how many times have you gone out to give an estimate to a potential client only to have them tell you they’ll “have to get back with you”? You suspect the reason for this response is they cannot afford to do the repair or install a new well. What if you could help them? Southeast Rural Assistance Projects, Inc. (SERCAP) is a nonprofit agency helping small rural towns and communities in need of water and wastewater upgrades. SERCAP currently serves the states of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Since the 1960s, SERCAP has brought clean water and wastewater facilities to over 450,000 residents in their seven-state network by providing very low inter- est individual well loans through a simple process. This is a way you, the drilling contractor, can help home- owners get water, help yourself gain new business, and also en- sure you’ll be paid for the services you provide. You probably hear of families in need quite often. Maybe they’re on a fixed income and their well has gone dry or is in need of repair. Many go without the help they need because they don’t know where to find it. Individual members of a household are eligible for SERCAP when all members have a combined income [for the most recent 12-month period for which information is available] no more than 100% of the median nonmetropolitan household income for the state or territory in which the individual lives. Current household income limits are as follows: The SERCAP program has several highlights which are important to note: e Loans are available for the purchase of a new water well or repairs to an existing well. e Loans can be made for up to $11,000 with a 1% interest rate and terms from five to ten years. e An upfront cost of $25 is required to be sent with the application to cover the cost of a credit report. e The loan recipient must own and occupy the home, or be occupying the home as the purchaser under a legally enforced land purchase contract not in default by the seller or purchaser. e The home must be located in a rural area. e The water well system may not be used to substitute water service available from collective water systems. e The water well system may not be associated with the construction of a new dwelling. e The loan recipient must not be suspended or debarred from participation in federal programs.
