Rowling , Author of the Harry Potter Series Avoid Debit Card Fraud Adapted from Information by First Federal Bank of Florida Despite large increases in debit card fraud in America over the last few years, many consumers are still unaware of the nature of the problem. Here are some ways debit card fraud happens, and how to keep it from happening to you: SKIMMING Card skimmers are devices placed over actual card readers which collect card information, and send it to criminals. Devices of this nature have been found on gas pumps, outdoor ATMs, DVD rental kiosks, and other unsecured areas. How to avoid: Before swiping your debit card, pay attention to the reader. Does it show evidence of tampering? Has something been added to the front? Try to only use card readers in well-lit, secure areas. This makes it more difficult for criminals to tamper with them. ONLINE Shopping online poses a risk. Customers could have malware on their com- puters which relays their debit card information to thieves. Online criminals often attempt to intercept payment information en route through “man-in-the-middle” at- tacks. It’s also important to know if and how your information is stored by retailers. How to avoid: Always check to make sure a site is secured with secure sockets layer (SSL) en- cryption. When protected, a web address will show as https rather than http. If you aren’t sure, do not use the site. Also, never allow a retailer to save your payment infor- mation, as it makes you more vulnerable. BREACHES A growing area of debit card fraud comes in the form of data breaches. The Target incident is the latest, and has received much attention from the media. How- ever, incidents like this happen more than people realize. The problem with breaches is there’s no way for card users to safeguard against them. By checking your bank account balance often, you can find fraudulent charges sooner; and sooner is always better when it comes to fraud. In today’s high-tech world, it’s hard to get around debit or credit card use. Awareness is your best defense. Knowing what you spend and where can keep you a step ahead of criminals.
