23 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® SEPTEMBER 2015 The “Idiots” Corner by “Billy Bob Smith” S i n c e t h e world is changing so fast, I thought I would focus on how idiots deal with something as old as the universe and as new as today - change. But first - why do people resist change? Is it fear, the need for control, arrogance, the need for comfort, insecurity, denial, impatience - yes! What do idiots want? Same ole, same ole. Don’t change anything. If this is how the world worked, we would all still be riding in horse-drawn carriages, using candles for light, and dying at 35. Last month, I was sitting in a meeting with several CEOs and one of them asked the group - “Are things changing in your organization?” Duh!!! Did this guy just land here from Mars? Later that day, I had a conversation with this business owner and asked him - “What is your approach to change?” His answer - just a dumb stare. If your customers are uncomfortable with change, they may select another source for their needs. Why? Well, I recently read an e-mail from a customer to an organization’s customer service department and basically it said - “I don’t like this new policy. It makes things more difficult for me.” The customer service rep’s response - “I’m sorry but it is what it is.” Hello - want to keep cus- tomers while things are changing - you better find a more positive and creative way to sell change to them or they are gone. How about employees and change. In the breakroom, the following conversation took place. “Did you hear about the new policy about vacations?” “Yes.” “What do you think?” “Well, someone in management seems out of touch with reality. Don’t they know our vacation policy already sucks and now they’ve just made it worse?” “Why do you think they made this change?” “Cause they are idiots, that’s why.” Last week while waiting in an airport lounge, I overheard one end of a conversation - what do you think? “Why is this changing? What are you going to do about it? Do you think that’s really a good idea? What if it doesn’t work? Then what? So it would seem we are back where we started.” I used to go to a restaurant to have one of their best and most popular sandwiches, but yesterday when I looked at the menu it was gone. I asked the server why it was off the menu and his response - “Management just took it off.” Well, now I have to find a new restaurant for lunch. How about one more - when the airlines started charging for checked bags, they all seemed surprised when every flight’s overheads were crammed. Come on folks - think and stop acting like everyone is going to accept change quickly and/or easily. There are only three responses to change - resist it, deny it ,or plan for it and embrace it and make it your partner. Which approach(es) do you think idiots take? Let me ask you - when it comes to change - are you an idiot???
