WorldWide Drilling Resource

36 SEPTEMBER 2015 WorldWide Drilling Resource ® Architects by Peter Tavino Litchfield Geothermal Everyone enjoyed the geothermal seminar I conducted at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in White Plains, New York. It provided 6½ contact hours of ap- proved American Institute of Architects (AIA) continuing education for 21 regis- tered architects, and 6½ hours of professional engineering continuing education for 22 licensed engineers. We started ca- sually with my favorite engineer’s joke: Architects and engineers are always fighting as to who should be in charge of the design of a building. They say if an architect is in charge, it will probably fall down. But if an engineer is in charge, people will want to tear it down! Drinking from the fire hose, the attentive group absorbed three days of International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA) and epic Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) training into one day of 220 PowerPoint slides. The Half Moon Foxmoor or- ganizers provided a printed book of the slides for all attendees, while IGSHPA reached out with three-day slide booklets for those interested in more. Unlike accredited installer workshops where folks each heat fuse pipe segments together, or vertical installers focusing on the well drilling aspect, this seminar addressed planning and design aspects important to the math- oriented audience. Sample design site plan drawings and emphasis on our heating-dominant climate appealed to them. Per AIA standards, there was no discussion on product preferences. Open-loop versus closed-loop advantages and disadvantages dominated the question and answer sessions. Software program demonstrations were a hit too. The two case studies for a specific commercial and residential project I designed were well received. They gave me a standing ovation as the seminar ended, and I applauded them back. The smile on my face lasted the rest of the day. The statements and comments in this article are based on information and references believed to be true and factual.
