Many workers are gone from the r jobs, and de ays can resu t n the process. There s a da y cost ($125) for hav ng the conta ner n the port, and we want to avo d the fee f poss b e. We are a so go ng to sh p to the eastern port of Guatema a, Puerto Barr os. Th s s the argest port n the country and there are banks where payments can be made for the var ous charges. Prev ous y, when we sh pped nto the port on the Pac f c s de of the country, Berny wou d have to make the tr p back and forth from the port to Guatema a C ty to make payments. Th s de ay was caused because there was no bank n the port c ty. Water For L fe (WFL) has 89 we s n operat on n Guatema a. Most are n remote v ages where there s no gr d power. A few are so ar powered, but most are hand-powered pumps. The peop e are happy to work for the c ean water, and many wa k a ong way every day to get to t. The pathways from the we s ook ke the spokes of a whee ead ng from the pump nto the jung e. Many we s have nes of peop e wa t ng to get water a day ong. WFL s devoted to the susta nab ty of the water sources. We have tra ned Berny and h s he per Sam r to make repa rs to the pumps n the v ages. Genera y, w th n a day or two of a ca from a v age say ng there s troub e w th the water, Berny and Sam r take the pump serv ce truck and head off to make the repa rs. The v agers are very happy. Peop e ask why we can t just tra n v agers to keep the r own pumps work ng. The answer s the very spec a zed techn ca know edge and equ pment necessary to make repa rs to the pumps s not eas y transferred to peop e who speak a nat ve d a ect and cannot understand what we are say ng to them n Span sh, et a one Eng sh.
