Always Be Aware While Dumping According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), in June, a truck driver was operating a Caterpillar 777F haul truck, dumping a load of gravel, when the ground at the dump point col- lapsed. The truck went over the edge of the dump point, overturned, and landed on its roof approximately 30 feet below. The victim was transported to the hos- pital where he later died of his injuries. Observe These Best Practices: a Ensure seat belts are provided, maintained, and worn at all times when equipment is in operation. a Incorporate engineering controls which require seat belts to be prop- erly fastened before equipment can be put into motion. a Visually inspect dumping locations prior to beginning work and as con- ditions change. a While loading out stockpiles, do not excavate the toe of the slopes below dumping points and travelways. a Utilize a bulldozer with the "dump- short, push-over" method of stockpil- ing material. a Provide and maintain adequate berms on the banks of roadways and at dumping points where a drop-off exists. a Train miners to recognize and avoid dumping point hazards and to under- stand the hazards associated with the work being performed. To get more tips from MSHA, go to www.msha.gov and type “dump truck” in the search box.
